#1: The Confluence situation has changed

(visited by Henk Pouwels and Inge Pouwels)

18-Apr-2003 -- This confluence is at 25 km distance (point to point) of our home. We liked to go by bike but the total travel distance by road was considered too much for our untrained bodies. So we took the car with the bikes mounted and drove to the little village of Kanis (see image #7), parked the car and continued by bike. Via Woerden, Montfoort and Benschop we approached the confluence from the North.

I had seen the images made by Jacek Pachocki (visit #1). To my surprise the situation had changed and was still changing: a round-about and a new road was constructed and people were finalising the borders. Photograph #1 shows the new situation, the DCP is in the front. The new road is a continuation of the N210 to IJsselstein, indicated in the map by grey dots. Comparing the ubiquitous N-S-E-W photographs (see #2, #3, #4 and #5) with the photographs of Jacek Pachocki shows the loss of trees. Photograph #6 zooms in to the TV transmitter tower at about 4 km East. This tower, with a mast on top of it, is 375 m high (1230 ft) and can be seen, at a clear day, from my house. In our flat country this high tower brings TV and radio signals to receivers as remote as 100 km. In wintertime this tower is very special, see my second visit to this confluence (visit #3).

Returning via IJsselstein and Harmelen I took some photographs (see #8, #9 and #10) to document the region and the beautiful time of the year. Having spent a whole day biking in bright sunshine (less wind would have been nice), we returned after a trip of about 60 km at our car. We mounted the bikes to the trailer and returned home satified over this day.

PS, the double character IJ is for Dutch people a single character, so if written in capital both are written in capital. Some word processors do not like to accept this exception.

In 2004 a webcam is mounted at 220m altitude: see http://www.nozema.nl/overnozema/WebcamIndex2.html (in Dutch, sorry). Don't hesitate to click at the three links at the right-hand side of the webcam image:
