07-Mar-2004 -- I started on a very cold day in March from Berlin – the place where I work. The challenge was to go to the CP and back by bike. It’s no problem to ride 2 x 80 km in summer, but when it’s freezing and snowing there was a bit of a challenge not to quit. Well, I approached the CP directly from the North, crossing a former Soviet military training area and passing a lot of signs warning me not to leave the tracks due to remaining explosives. I feared the CP would be in that dangerous area, but in the final approach I got into an unrestricted area (usually this is just the other way around). Since the point is just some 150 m from the road, it can be accessed easily.
Its in the middle of a huge meadow with a single tree on it. Interestingly, the CP and the tree are at the same location, as if the tree was planted on purpose to mark the confluence.
Since it was too cold to stand still – I quickly took the pictures and headed back home. After riding 160 km without any food I was only dreaming for food and a warm place, but happy to have made it.
