05-Nov-2005 -- Just over a month ago I purchased a simple $100 GPS and have enjoyed it on a few hikes since. A couple weeks ago I learned of www.confluence.org. With a little free time this morning, I figured I would have a look at the closest confluence point to my home: 40N 105W.
My home is near 39.99N 104.74W, 13.7 miles from the confluence, according to my GPS. Highway 7, which lies almost exactly on the 40th parallel, cuts through my town of Brighton as Bridge St. I drove Highway 7 west just past I-25, parking at the NE corner of Hwy 7 and CR 7.
My GPS read approx 90m to the confluence, mostly to the west. I crossed to the south side of Hwy 7, navigated a barbed wire fence, and walked mostly west. It was easier than I expected to get the GPS to read N40.0000 W105.0000, with an accuracy of 4m, altitude 1593m. The point is on the northern edge of a field, but outside where any crops are grown.
Presumably, 40N105W is as easy as this hobby can get. Will I do any more? Well, 40N104W is almost 40miles due east of my home, so.....maybe.
