16-Oct-2004 -- Starting 1301km from the confluence I had planned for today meant driving, flying, catching a bus, driving before finally walking to the confluence.

Having borrowed fellow DCPer Karl's GPS to attempt the planned points over the next days with improved EGNOS/Differential accuracy.

Having experimented with the accuracy of the GPSs at 49N 16E together I knew the best plan for heightened accuracy was:-

1. Keep GPS on for at least 30 minutes before arriving near the CP.
2. Only use EGNOS if available.
3. Use d.ddddd instead of dd:mm.mmm or dd:mm:ss.s as it is the most accurate.

So before I set off store the CP and "GOTO" it, connect the GPS to the car power cable ... Oh first problem last few days have shaken the GPS power cable apart and the funny screw and something else I emptied from my bag this morning before leaving Vienna appear to be fundamental to powering a GPS device from the cigar lighter in the car!!

Ah well off I go anyway from London Heathrow I used the M4, M25, M40 and then the A422 I parked by the Church near the confluence point walked back past the country store to the gate to the field.

Gate was not locked so open the gate into the field and walked straight to the point.

As mentioned by other visitors it was obvious sheep had at some time been in the field as they had left "evidence" behind which I had to avoid as I danced for the zeros.

I was dissappointed that I was unable to get better than 6m accuracy at the point. Differential accuracy was possible in parts of the field but not near the point itself! :-(

The confluence found I took the necessary pictures and departed for my final destination of the day Blaby. Tomorrow it is off to 53N1W.
